HOME LEARNING
WAYS TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD
A few times a week, or as often as is reasonable for you and your family, students should spend ~15 min. on these two things, with the focus being on time spent reading aloud with someone and listening to reading.
1) Read in French (and English).
- Students are allowed two library books per week---one French and one English.
- They are also allowed two to three levelled French books ("just right" books) from the yellow book bins. They can exchange these as frequently as needed.
- I also encourage students to read anything that you would normally allow! :)
- Online reading at RKpublishing:
2) Incorporate maths and numbers into everyday life.
- Play number games en français.
- Playing any game that involves counting or calculating will be beneficial. Some examples include Cribbage, Yahtzee, Pyramid Solitaire, etc. There are many online maths games found under Helpful Links. , and you can find links for interactive maths manipulatives, videos for counting to 100 en français, and more here.

- Create + solve word problems using everyday situations. When they have the hang of it, ask them to make a word problem and solve it. Can they express themselves en français? Some examples are:
- We have eight slices of pizza. If we each eat one slice, how many will be left? Nous avons huit pointes de pizza. Si chaque personne mange une pointe, combien de pointes est-ce qu'il y aura qui reste ?
- We travelled 14 km to the H2O, then nine kilometres to Costco. It is 13 km to return home again. How far do we travel? Nous avons parcouru 14 km de chez nous jusqu'au centre H2O, puis neuf kilomètres de plus en allant à Costco. Le voyage de retour à la maison est 13 km. Combien de kilomètres est-ce que nous parcourons en tout ?
- I draw three pictures each day. After five days, how many pictures are there? Je fais trois dessins chaque jour. Après cinq jours, combien de dessins y a-t-il ?
- This book has 462 pages in all. We have read 175 pages. How many pages are left? Ce livre a 462 pages. Nous avons lu 175 pages. Combien de pages reste-t-il à lire ?
